Jim received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 1968 from Kettering University, (formerly General Motors Institute) in Flint Michigan. While at GMI, he was a member and officer of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and served on the Student Government Council. He received a Juris Doctor in 1973 from Michigan State University Law School (formerly Detroit College of Law).

Attorney J.R. Hastings has practiced law in California for more than 35 years. He is a former Air Force pilot for the U.S. military and served in Vietnam. After his active duty military service, and while serving in the reserves, he continued to fly as a certified commercial pilot, and established his full-time estate planning law practice.
